Details
East Province is wilderness compared to the other provinces of Oenklay. In ancient times, its central mountains were home to a number of iron and copper mines that have been abandoned while the barely subsistence level of farming practiced in the region prevents new prospectors from arising. Most of the settlements consist of a few dozen families or less governed by an informal group of elders. Without formal governments, stone towers and strong arms provide the only defense the small villages have against the persistent threats of slaver-pirates from the Shatterend and abundant monstrosities such as landsharks and perytons.
Two larger villages still manage to survive in East Province. Joring is a waypoint for travelers taking an overland route from Einea to Romhai or (more commonly) Anealeas. Travelers come across the mountains through one of the passes near Bluwell and take a ferry across the Imsea before resuming overland travel to Vengril, Tendo, or Maande. Einea - via its merchant houses - and Romhai both maintain strong presences in Joring in order to keep the trade route open. Their presence wasn't enough to save Joring during the Pestilence.
Middlesea is a major fishing village and the only net exporter of goods in all of East Province. A large number of salt licks nearby provide easy and ample means to preserve the prodigious quantities of fish that are caught. Dryer weather than Sopor (due to the mountains) also helps with the curing process, ensuring that most of the fish shipped around Oenklay is Middlesea fish.
